Cesar Summermatter passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, December 19, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marie-Louise, and two daughters, Bettina and Annabelle.

Mr. Summermatter was born in Eisten, Switzerland in February of 1923. His love of the outdoors started at a young age growing up in the Swiss mountains near the Matterhorn. During World War II, he served in the Swiss Army protecting the country’s border. He worked as a chef in many famous restaurants including Michael’s Pub, The Stork Club in New York City and Cooperstown’s Otesaga Resort. His Swiss heritage and cuisine were featured at the Hathorn Inn in Warwick, NY, which he owned from 1966 to 1984. Christmas was always a favorite time of the year at the Hathorn as Cesar lit live candles on the 25 foot tall Christmas tree. After selling the Hathorn Inn, Cesar and Marie-Louise moved to East Pharsalia where he continued as a chef at the Otesaga Resort and also enjoyed farming. Cesar will be missed by his family and also by many friends.

Services for Cesar will be held at the convenience of the family.

The arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Funeral Home.

Born March 22, 1923 in Norwich, Robert was the son of Claude E. and Aurelia
(Cevasco) Smith. He knew but one residence, acquired by his grandparents,
Louis and Rose Cevasco in 1908. The same property his parents and his
aunt Evelyn Cevasco lived in.

Robert served for thirty-three months in the US Army during World War
II and later attended the Powelson Institute of Business under the GI Bill.
His working career was with Victory Markets.

Robert served as the Residential Chairman of the Community Chest of
Norwich, now United Way, during the 1960′s and 1970′s. He was devoted to the Catholic Church and served in various capacities for St. Paul’s Parish
his entire life. His love for the catholic community and the greater
Norwich area will continue to be expressed in many significant ways by his
creation of the R.C. Smith Charitable Foundation.

During 2007, Robert was blessed by the visits and oversight of
“Dottie”, his angel on earth and from the Chenango County Hospice and Palliative Care Agency. In lieu of flowers please consider gifts to this wonderful organization.

Robert is survived by his special friends, John Tiquin and Gary Clark
and also his special care givers, Joan Anderson, Sheri Clapper, Penny
Manwarren, Terri Maynard, Bev Meyers, Linda Slater, Leona Smith and Amy Casey and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his uncle, Angelo Cevasco as well as his aunt, Evelyn Cevasco.

A Mass of Resurrection for Robert will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday,
December 4, 2007 at St. Paul’s Church with Rev. Douglas Cunningham
celebrating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Monday from 4-6 pm. Marie Dykstra, pastoral care, will conduct prayer services at 5:30.
